About 300 viewers attended the opening of "Double Homage" at the Favarola Museum at St. Thomas University in Miami before Miami Art Week got underway, but it is still on view. This posthumous exhibition features a series of drawings by Frank Izquierdo, created as an homage to the 18th-century Austro-German sculptor Franz Xaver Messerschmidt.
Hanging the drawings much higher than usual on the museum walls was a calculated decision to literally and figuratively place the artist’s work at a higher level and closer to the heavens.

The exhibition title, Double Homage: Izquierdo and Messerschmidt, might suggest the work of both artists would be shown. However, Messerschmidt’s famous expressive sculptural “Character Heads” were notably absent. This was intentional, as the show focuses not on Messerschmidt's work itself, but on Izquierdo’s artistic response to it. Rather than displaying a series of head drawings, Izquierdo chose to render an homage to Messerschmidt through emotionally charged torsos in energetic poses and marked by the scars of past experiences and mutations leading toward an uncertain future. Witnessing the exhibition reveals that the curator and the Favarola Museum are, in effect, rendering homage to Izquierdo for the homage he rendered to the earlier visual artist.

The Favarola Museum has a long history of attracting the public to view curated art exhibitions, but the number of attendees was unexpected. Many of the attendees listened to the presentation from crowded hallways, as there wasn’t enough room at the reception hall. According to Isabel Medina, Museum Director, this event was among the top five best-attended shows at the Favarola Museum.
