An Italian computer scientist and a Cupertino high school student demonstrated that the most celebrated language models—Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Llama—consistently fail to detect harassment or bullying when it is couched in the hyperactive slang of Generation Alpha. Here is a global example, born in English but now repeated half the world over by those who scarcely know what it means: skibidi sigma.
The term skibidi sigma emerges from the collision of two viral phenomena that crossed paths on TikTok and YouTube Shorts around 2023 and 2024. On one side, Skibidi descends from the absurdist series Skibidi Toilet—videos produced by the Russian channel DaFuq!?Boom!, where human heads rise out of toilets to dance to Skibidi (2018), a song by the band Little Big—which metastasized into a global meme. On the other, Sigma comes from the Anglophone label sigma male, popularized across forums and social media to describe the solitary, self-sufficient man standing apart from the herd. The fusion of these two words, absent of logic yet heavy with irony, became a hallmark expression of Generation Alpha, deployed in absurdist humor as a kind of shared cultural password.
