A Chinese Steed and an American Stallion

August 31st, 2025 | By Jorge Rodriguez

The Chinese—not so much as a nation, but as a people—have been somewhat underestimated at different points in history. I believe that is a mistake. In my homeland, for example, when a patient was deemed beyond saving, the saying went that not even a Chinese doctor could rescue him. Yet as a state, China has always been powerful. In 2015 it began to put into motion a plan to stop being the world’s cheap factory, and just a couple of years later it set the goal of becoming, by 2030, the global leader in Artificial Intelligence. Meanwhile, the United States—which as a nation has indeed been rather underestimated by much of traditionalist Europe—has invested billions in research and created programs to accelerate its own development.

China seems to have taken a slight lead. Its vast population and geographic diversity allow it to gather highly disparate data to train its systems, and in this race, plurality and the broad spectrum of response in data are the essential resource. The American restrictions on chip exports have ended up strengthening the technological capacity of the Asian giant instead of curbing it. Because when the Communist Party calls upon its developers for a patriotic effort, insomnia becomes a collective asset.

Un caballo chino y otro americano

Agosto 31, 2025 | Por R10

China parece haber tomado ligera ventaja.
