Companies cited AI as the reason for more than 50,000 layoffs in 2025, TechCrunch noted on February 1st, summarizing a New York Times report on so-called AI-washing. Amazon and Pinterest were among the companies that connected recent cuts to artificial intelligence. A Forrester report warned that many businesses announcing AI-related layoffs do not yet have mature, vetted AI applications ready to replace those roles. Molly Kinder of the Brookings Institution called the AI explanation an investor-friendly message when the alternative might be admitting that the business is ailing.
The convenient layoff gives automation a theatrical function before it has an operational one. A company can cut workers for debt, weak demand, bad planning, pandemic overhiring, or shareholder pressure, then place the severance letter inside the grander story of technological inevitability. AI becomes a cleaner culprit than management. It sounds modern, disciplined, and future-facing. The dismissed worker is asked to stand inside a narrative where his job did not disappear because the company misread the market, but because history accelerated. That may be true in some cases. In others, the machine is still immature, absent, or decorative, while the savings are immediate and human.
