The Unbuilt Device

September 15th, 2025 | By Jorge Rodriguez

Nothing closed a $200 million Series C led by Tiger Global in September, lifting the consumer electronics company to a $1.3 billion valuation. It had shipped 5.1 million devices, although IDC put its global market share below 1 percent and reported that 80 percent of its units were still sold in Asia. Alongside the financing, Nothing promised an AI-first device for 2026 and an operating system built around personalization. Its public evidence remained limited to features such as Essential Search. Founder Carl Pei said smartphones would remain the main form for consumer AI applications for at least three to five years.

The absent device performed useful work before acquiring a shape. It gave investors a future category, let Nothing distinguish itself from larger handset makers, and turned personalization into an asset whose value could be priced ahead of use. Yet a personalized operating system demands intimate permissions. To anticipate a person, software needs access to searches, files, habits, contacts, and repeated corrections. The company asks for trust while it withholds the object through which trust will be tested. Humane and Rabbit had already shown how quickly an AI hardware promise meets batteries, latency, subscriptions, and dissatisfied owners. Nothing now has capital and a deadline. Customers still need to see the device, its permissions screen, and the action produced when Essential Search gets an answer wrong.

El dispositivo sin construir

Septiembre 15, 2025 | Por R10
