The Edited Taste
Spotify will let some listeners inspect and edit the Taste Profile that shapes recommendations, Discover Weekly, and Wrapped. The profile is assembled from listening behavior, including music played by children, household members, or a person trying to sleep. What the service presents as personal taste can therefore be an accidental record of shared speakers, car rides, and routines that were never meant to describe anyone.
Allowing natural-language edits gives the listener a small editorial role. A person can tell Spotify to reduce a mood, remove a genre, or correct a history that has drifted away from the self it claims to represent. The change is modest, but it exposes the fiction of algorithmic taste as a stable fact. Recommendation systems do not discover an inner identity; they accumulate evidence and turn it into predictions. The editable profile makes that process visible while preserving Spotify’s power to decide which corrections affect the home page, the playlists, or the annual portrait. The user can revise the dossier, though the platform still owns the filing cabinet.
