The launch of OpenAI’s 4o model, hailed as a leap forward in image generation, contains its own paradox. It corrected the horrors of the old algorithm—distorted faces, phantom limbs, twisted artifacts—replacing them with flawless illustrations. In doing so, it erased the seams that once betrayed human presence, those reminders that behind chromatic perfection lurked an artificial monstrosity. Now anyone can dress Captain America in the aesthetic of Miyazaki. The marvel consumes the energy of a small city. The price of this feat—the erasure of everyday imagination—is steep: tons of electronic waste, billions of useless images, redundant copies, and the pollution of data, code, and toxic hardware.
Few seem to care. AI will not destroy art, but it may reduce it to parody: fanfics—amateur concoctions of fan fiction—grant established cultural icons a bitter immortality while fragile voices are extinguished. This mass culture scarcely advances; it devours itself. Simplified emotions are the favored nourishment of fascism. Nor is this the apocalypse; it is more like a carnival mirror, distorting symbolic production into an endless loop of repetition. For now, genuine surprise appears to have been taken hostage. / Adapted from “As AI image generation gets better, our standards will diminish,” by Shaun Prescott. APC, no. 545, May 2025.
Extractado de “As AI image generation gets better, our standards will diminish”, de Shaun Prescott. APC, nº 545, mayo de 2025.
